Deut. 8-10, Prov. 4

In Deut. Moses is preparing the people to take the land. He knows that He himself will not go in it, personally. He sharing the 40 year journey that they have had together and encouraging them to be faithful and not forget the Lord their God. He knows that prosperity awaits them and fears that they will forsake the Lord. Prosperity can do that to you. In fact, ultimately they did forsake the Lord.

But it is good to remember. To reflect. To take stock in His faithfulness. Let's keep His victories and faithfulness in front of us as we take new ground.

Prov. 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

Don't allow anything to contaminate your heart

Prov. 4:24 Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.

If the heart is guarded and cultivated, perversity will not be found in the mouth

Prov. 4:25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you.

Keep what the Lord has said to you, in front of you. Our focus determines our reality.

Prov. 4:26 Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.

Watch your steps, stay the coarse.

Prov. 4:27 Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.

Don't get sidetracked, especially with things that are not pleasing to the Lord.

Deut. 5-7, Prov. 3 Psalm 3

Deut. 6:4 ¶ Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.

Deut. 6:5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Deut. 6:6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.

Deut. 6:7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Deut. 6:8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.

Deut. 6:9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

The Great Commandment is given first here in Deut. 6. "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. "

They are to be upon the heart. Get them inside of you!

v.7 Impress Them (Repeat Them) to your children. Christian Education begins in the home. This is generational.

v.7 Talk about them - at home, when you run errands, the last thing you do in the night and the first thing you do in the morning.

v.8 Tie them as symbols - Make use of things that help you remember....visually set reminders to train the heart.

v.9 Write them - Post them in places that you frequently access. doorframes and gates are places of going in and out.

Deut. 1,2 Proverbs 1 Ps. 1

Prov. 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Psa. 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.

Psa. 1:3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

Gaining knowledge of the Word through meditation puts us as a tree planted by living streams. The root system stays nourished and healthy and fruit comes naturally. Meditation needs to be recaptured again by the body of Christ.

Numbers 33, 34 Proverbs 27

Prov. 27:2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips.

Don't brag about yourself

Prov. 27:5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love.

A love that manifests no rebuke is morally weak

Prov. 27:6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.

Correction given in love is superior.

Prov. 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

Accountability between friends develops character. It sharpens us.

Prov. 27:19 As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.

The heart reflects who we really are.

Prov. 27:21 The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but man is tested by the praise he receives.

Praise serves to reveal and refine the condition of the heart.

Leading Past Discouragement to Inheritance

I started writing about what I read today and I was getting so much out of it it turned into a blog post. Haha.  It's found in Numbers 32.

Another example of thoughts becoming clearer as revelation comes  through writing.

Here is the link:

Also had some real good responses from my last post on what people have vision for. See what they have said. Real good.
Be encouraged. God has lots of dreams in the hearts of His people!!

Leadership Thoughts - Numbers 11-13, Proverbs 19

A few Leadership Thoughts (as condensed as possible)

Num. 11:16 ¶ The LORD said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people. Have them come to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you.

Num. 11:17 I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take of the Spirit that is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you carry the burden of the people so that you will not have to carry it alone.

Num. 11:25 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took of the Spirit that was on him and put the Spirit on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again.

The Lord anointed 70 leaders for the purpose of helping Moses carry the burden of the people. Here is a lesson on impartation. The 70 received the Spirit that was on Moses. It came from God through someone else. When the Spirit was imparted they prophesied. As leaders we need the anointing to lead! We need as much of it as we can possible get.

Next:

Num. 12:1 ¶ Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite.

Num. 12:2 “Has the LORD spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?” And the LORD heard this.

Don't confuse anointing with governmental authority. Don't confuse the gifts with the right to lead. The Spirit had come on them and they got cocky and spoke against Moses. Uhh, that's dangerous. What always gets me is the last sentence in verse 2 "And the LORD heard this." God will protect the reputation of his chosen leaders. He is zealous about this.

So God calls a leadership meeting. He informs Miriam and Aaron that he speaks to Moses face to face while prophets get dreams and visions. He defines levels of authority. Here is a great lesson on how the prophetic comes under the pastoral. Just because one is anointed to prophecy does not mean they are anointed to lead or be critical of leadership! Don't ever do this.  This is not going to work out well for Miriam.

Num. 12:8 With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”

That last phrase in verse 8 needs to be noted. It's chilling. I hope I never get that question asked of me from the Lord. God defends Moses. Moses never defends himself (another lesson here). Miriam is struck with leprosy and outside the camp for 7 days. I know leaders who thought they were wiser then those in authority and are completely shipwrecked and no longer in ministry. And some (like Miriam) restored.  It was the prayer of Moses, the one she criticized, that released the compassion of God. Yet another lesson on leadership. Pray for those who persecute you!

Chapter 13. Exploring Canaan. More great stuff here.

Numbers 7, Prov. 17, Acts 1,2

Prov. 17:3 The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the heart.

Let your heart shine like gold refined in the fire

Prov. 17:5 He who mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.

Don't make fun of the poor and broken. Don't gloat over natural disasters

Prov. 17:6 ¶ Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged;

Ah yes, in a  few years now!

Prov. 17:9 He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.

Overlooking an offense is strength in preserving a relationship

Prov. 17:10 A rebuke impresses a man of discernment more than a hundred lashes a fool.

Need I say it again. Be teachable!! Proverbs is relentless on this.

Prov. 17:16 Of what use is money in the hand of a fool, since he has no desire to get wisdom?

Wisdom is worth more than money. You need both!

Prov. 17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Real friends surface when you face adversity. They "keep the love on" regardless.

Prov. 17:27 A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered.

The one who knows much says little

Numbers 5,6 Proverbs 16

I covered two laws today. In Numbers 5 is what is called the Law of Jealousy. Long story short, if a man suspected his wife was unfaithful, he brought her to a priest and she was made to drink bitter water. If she was unfaithful (though she never admitted to it) the water would cause severe pain in her body, and she would not be able to bear children. Don't know if that was forever or for a season. Wow. If she indeed was a faithful wife, nothing would happen to her. Hey, what about the guys, did they have to drink anything?

In Numbers 6 was the Nazarite Vow. Of course this is a huge practice with Lou Engles teams at the Justice HOP in KC. What it amounts to is "a season of separation" to the Lord. It was a vow made by either a man OR a woman. They would not drink or eat anything from the vine and they were to let their hair grow. This was the visible sign of the Nazarite. I have to admit, the "Nazarite" name sounds cool. The vow was for as long as they wanted. At the end of the vow they would go before the Lord, cut off their hair and put it in fire.

So much great stuff in Proverbs 16

Prov. 16:2 All a man’s ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the LORD.

God is more concerned with why we do things then what we do

Prov. 16:3 Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.

For our plans to succeed, we must depend on the Lord

Prov. 16:9 In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.

We plan but God determines what actually happens.

Prov. 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Pride is never good

Prov. 16:20 Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.

Certain things are mentioned over and over. Again, Be teachable.

Prov. 16:21 The wise in heart are called discerning, and pleasant words promote instruction.

Wisdom and discernment are married

Prov. 16:23 A wise man’s heart guides his mouth, and his lips promote instruction.

Wisdom helps and guides people.

Prov. 16:24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Our words effect people physically. Now that is an interesting thought.

Prov. 16:31 Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life.

I really like this one. 'Nuff said.

Prov. 16:32 Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city.

Ruling your emotions is greater than ruling a city
